Museums & Expos

La Fortaleza

La Fortaleza (fortress) of Santa Lucia, is believed to be Ansite, the last refuge of the aboriginal Guanches. It is here that the Guanches lived and defended themselves in the natural caves in this great rocky mountain, and kept their livestock below in the ravine. In 1485 the Guanches surrendered to the Castillian conquerors, although its leader jumped to his death rather than be turned to christianity.

A museum centre is open to the public and showcases artefacts from the various caves in and around the fortress.

Botanical Gardens

For those keen to see local flora and tropical plants, why not visit one of the following botanical gardens. Huerta de las Flores, Agaete - 1,50€ * Viera y Clavijo Garden, Tafira - free * Jardin de la Marquesa, Las Palmas - 6€ * El Parque Botanico de Maspalomas - free

And lastly, Viveros Morgan garden center. We know its not an offical public garden, but it's in an awesome canyon and it's free.
